OUGD601 - Context of Practice 3 proposal from last year

To what extent does Aesthetic ‘Style’ reflect the context, audience and/or function of contemporary Graphic Design?

To gain an insight as to the extent Aesthetic ‘Style’ reflects the context, audience and function of contemporary Graphic Design, I will research the influence that the product, branding and the target audience has over the final design product. I will focus predominantly on the minimalist style, as I find the ability to peak an interest with form follows function captivating and a style I would like to focus on in the future, although I will touch on all genres of graphic design as each can be used to promote and advertise products in a different way to different audiences. To gain a better understanding of how the design would be received by its intended and unintended audience I will dissect the aesthetics for different adverts, brands and products. This should highlight the aspects of the design that resonated with all, some and the intended. This will guide me to formulate an opinion of how specific brands and products should be promoted to ensure maximum efficiency. I will look into the aesthetic evaluation of successful brands to see how they have maximised the influence of their graphic design and overcome previous design shortcomings. Brands such as Vogue, Apple, Chanel, Audi and Marks and Spencer’s would be ideal to investigate for this topic, as they offer a wide variety of different products, functions, target audiences and design styles.
